Chandy criticises Left parties’ stance on projects

Kozhikode: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy on Saturday said that the Left parties oppose every developmental project initially and realise the mistake at a later stage, delaying “deserved development” to the people. He was inaugurating the ‘Deshasneha Sangamam’ organised by the Youth Congress to mark the Quit India day, at the Town Hall here. “By the time they change their stance, it is too late for the country and the public exchequer incurs a huge financial liability due to this,” said Mr. Chandy.

Historian M.G.S. Narayanan, who delivered the keynote address, said that Mahatma Gandhi was the “commander in chief without a gun” at the forefront of the Indian freedom struggle. “The idea of freedom is still relevant and it needs the right mindset to gain it and retain it,” he observed. District Youth Congress president Adam Mulsi presided. Congress leaders, P. Sankaran, K.C. Abu and N.Veerankutty among others spoke.

Earlier, inaugurating a family get-together of the Kerala Municipal-Corporation Workers Association here, Mr. Chandy said that health and public hygiene should be the prime concern of the government in view of the outbreak of the monsoon-related diseases in the State. Mr. Chandy, who stated that Keralites, who are known for their personal hygiene, have to go a long way when it comes to public hygiene.

The Opposition leader also said that the solid waste from cities had become a huge problem for the municipal and corporation authorities. “In cities across the world, solid waste is considered a resource to manufacture other products.

“But in our cities it is still a menace,” he said. The authorities should seriously think about finding a permanent solution to this issue, he added.
