Blasts near jail create a flutter

CUTTACK: Choudwar circle jail authorities and the local police were sent into a tizzy on Sunday night after three powerful explosions were heard at a deserted place just about 50 meters away from the jail main gate.

According to sources, the explosions took place around 8 p.m. in the evening and they were so powerful that the jail inmates preparing to call it a day at the moment were shocked and panicked. The jail guards became vigilant and the local police were alerted immediately.

Senior district police officials including the city DCP rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area before a thorough search. “No one was arrested or detained in this connection till Monday evening”, said the DCP S. Praveen Kumar adding that investigations are on.

Police however found some bomb making materials from the spot stating that the explosions could be some crackers exploded by some mischief mongers.

Scientific team and sniffer dogs were also pressed into service on Monday to assist the local police in investigating the matter. IG prison V. Thiagarjan too visited the jail and took stock of the situation.
