This Day That Age
(From an editorial) Though there is now no great danger of war in the Middle East, something like a stalemate has developed in Lebanon and Jordan. In the former, President Chamoun will hold office until the third week of September and his cabinet with him. The President-elect General Chehab has called for the withdrawal of American troops but the existing regime has not supported him, with the consequence that the rebels are talking of starting hostilities again. While the United Nations Observation Group is satisfied that it can close the border with Syria, the London Times Correspondent in Beirut reports that Americans are flying their own planes over the border despite U.N. protests. The United Nations General Assembly is to debate this uncomfortable situation at the request of the Security Council. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
