Floods: 5 dead, crop loss estimated at 19 crore

ADILABAD: Five deaths were attributed to the floods caused by the heavy rainfall during between August 3 and August 11 while the estimated crop loss including loss due to soil erosion was put at over Rs. 19 crores. According to a preliminary survey report on damages in Adilabad district released here, four deaths took place between August 3 and 5 while the fifth person was washed away on August 11 when the Peddavagu river was in spate.

Crop was lost in over 18,000 acres while another 1,500 acres were damaged to soil erosion and sand casting in the district. Of this cotton crop was damaged in about 10,000 acres and soyabean in over 6,500 acres valued at Rs. 9.68 crore and Rs. 6.69 crore respectively.

The number of houses that were damaged fully were 779 while 3,912 houses were reported to have been inundated in 22 mandals where the heavy rainfall was recorded. The AP Transco reported a loss of about Rs. 4.3 crores due to damages to transformers and uprooting of poles. Damages to roads, bridges, tanks and buildings ran into several crores of rupees. The Government assisted over 7,000 affected families disbursing an amount of Rs. 2.5 crores and rice was distributed among these families, the quantity adding up to 1,435 quintals.
