Mr. Selwyn Lloyd, British Foreign Secretary, on August 14, supported President Eisenhower’s Middle East peace plan and renewed Britain’s pledge to get out of Jordan at the request of its lawful Government or after “suitable arrangements” to preserve its independence. Mr. Lloyd also suggested that Secretary-General Hammarskjoeld “take necessary steps in consultation with the Governments concerned” to help maintain the integrity of Lebanon and Jordan. Mr. Lloyd promised Britain’s help for any international regional economic development programme which might be set up in the Middle East on the lines suggested by President Eisenhower.
