Prizes distributed

CHENNAI: Students who wrote passionately and with a social commitment about the need to stay away from alcohol and tobacco received prizes at a function in the Government Royapettah Hospital. The Surgical Gastro Enterology department of the hospital had organised an essay writing contest on the “Ill effects of Tobacco and Alcohol” for three categories of students — Medical College, College and School. An additional category for Tamil essays was introduced. In the school category, Shreya Iyer of St.John’s Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Villivakkam and R.Ramakrishnan of Shristi Vidyashram, Vellore, won the first and second places respectively. In the college category, Amrutanshu Mishra of NIT Tiruchi won the first place and the second place went to Juhi Singh of the Institute for Financial Management and Research, Chennai.

The third category, for medical students, also had two winners. M.Prabha of Shree Mookambiga Institute of Medical Sciences, Kulasekaram won the first place and the second place went to Hajira Fathima S of Chengalpet Medical College. In the Tamil category, Selva Nithya of Perambalur won the first place and Osho of Nanilam won the second place. All participants will also receive certificates of appreciation, according to S.M.Chandramohan, head of the Surgical Gastro Enterology Department, GRH. A total of 460 entries were received, he added. Karuthiah Pandian, MD, Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation, handed over the prizes on Friday. R.Surendran, head, gastro intestinal surgery, Stanley Medical College, gave away a trophy to Arumugam, the principal of the Government Higher Secondary School, Nanilam, for sending most number of entries (86).

GRH Superintendent K.Rajendran participated in the programme.
