K. Subramanian

MAYILADUTURAI: The Mayiladuturai Municipality in Nagapattinam district will soon take up major development works at a cost of nearly Rs. 45 crore.

Lion’s share of the money will be spent on improvement of roads and establishing a new bus stand. The municipality sought financial assistance from the State Government for carrying out various development works and the Local Administration Minister, M. K. Stalin, took immediate steps and sanctioned the proposal. About Rs. 40 crores had already been allocated, the Municipal Chairman, J. Lingarajan, told The Hindu.

It had been proposed to construct the new bus stand on a 4.25 acre municipal land on the Mayiladuturai-Tarangampadi road as the existing two bus terminus had become congested. Besides, commuters coming from Nagapattinam area and Tiruchi-Thanjavur-Kumbakonam have to board buses at two different places. A decision will soon be taken to construct the new bus stand after a discussion at the municipal council meeting.

Mr. Lingarajan said that the construction of underground drainage had been completed and the municipality had started giving sewer connections to houses and commercial establishments. He pointed out that nearly 2,000 sewer connections had been provided to individual houses and commercial establishments out of the 13,600 connections. Sewer connection would be given as soon as the house owners paid the requisite fee, he said and appealed to owners to take quick steps for getting the connection as early as possible.

The municipality had recently completed the construction of new buildings for the Kittappa Municipal Higher Secondary School (Rs.40 lakh) and Narayanasamy Municipal Higher Secondary School (Rs.10 lakh) and a modern slaughter house (Rs.21 lakh).
