Kozhikode: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) secured two seats each when the results of by-elections to local bodies in the district were declared on Tuesday. LDF candidates won the Nadavayil ward in Maniyoor grama panchayat and Mammilithazhathu ward at Chelanoor grama panchayat. The UDF managed to get the Kappad ward of Chemmancherry grama panchayat and Omassery division of Koduvally block panchayat. Communist Party of India (Marxist) nominee M. Vimala trounced her nearest rival C. Sreeja of the Congress by a margin of 247 votes. Vimala secured 545 and Sreeja got 298 votes. CPI(M) candidate P. Shaji defeated UDF nominee Lekshmi Thiyakkandi by a margin of 299 votes in the election to the Mammilithazhathu ward at Chelanoor grama panchayat. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) nominee Sheriff Master won from the Kappad ward. He defeated his nearest rival K. Hamsa of the CPI(M) by a margin of 212 votes. In the previous election, the CPI(M) had won from the Kappad ward. IUML candidate Ahamed Kutty Haji won from the Omassery division.
