CPI links nuke deal with reforms

TIRUPATI: The Communist Party of India (CPI) sees an invisible link between the nuclear deal and economic reforms, which it suspects the UPA government to be rubbing on the nation. The party has accused the Centre of trying to pursue with vengeance its ‘anti-employee’ and ‘anti-people’ agenda after the Left parties decided to part ways.

Addressing scribes here on Tuesday, party’s State secretary K. Narayana blamed the Union government for trying to withdraw Rs.2.50 lakh crore from the Employee Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) for investing the same with mutual fund companies.

Besides, the government had even promised the latter to deposit Rs.25,000 crore every year. He also blamed the Centre for proceeding ahead with its disinvestment plan in as many as 38 profit-making banks.

The Left parties had effectively thwarted such attempts earlier. Mr. Narayana expected support to swell from employee, trader, worker and public associations and various other quarters for the Left-backed general strike call on Wednesday.

In the same vein, the CPI leader also heaped corruption and nepotism charges on the State’s ‘Jalayagnam’ programme and held the government responsible for the poor quality of construction, which led to the caving in of three tank bunds during the recent floods.
