India drops a point

NEW DELHI: India dropped a crucial point to Turkey ‘C’ following spearhead A. Adhiban’s shock loss on the top board and remained in the joint third place after five rounds of the World Youth (under-16) Chess Olympiad at Mersin, Turkey, on Wednesday.

India, expected to blank Turkey, could only manage a 3-1 victory after Adhiban lost to Cankut Emiroglu, rated nearly 400 points below on the top board. S. P. Sethuraman, Prasanna Rao and K. Priyadarshan won, as expected.

The result raised India’s tally to 13.5 points, same as Russia which defeated Slovakia 3-1.

Armenia (15.5) stayed ahead after a 2-2 deadlock with second-placed Philippines (14.5). India plays Philippines in the sixth round.

Priyadarshan bt Ufuk Sezen Arat); Armenia (15.5) drew with Philippines (14.5) 2-2; Slovakia (11) lost to Russia (13.5) 1-3; Azerbaijan (12) drew with Georgia (12) 2-2; Sri Lanka (10) lost to Turkey ‘A’ (12.5) 0.5-3.5; Bosnia Herzegovina (8.5) lost to Switzerland ‘A’ (11.5) 0.5-3.5.
