Cases against Army officer, ex-councillor

TIRUCHI: The Edamalaipattipudur police have registered a case against the Commanding Officer of 117 Infantry Battalion, (Territorial Army), The Guards, Tiruchi Colonel C.P. Medappa and five Territorial Army (TA) soldiers in connection with the alleged detention of former Corporation councillor S. Selvam at the training area of the TA here on Tuesday.

The case was registered, on a complaint lodged by Mr. Selvam, under Sections 147 (rioting), 342 (wrongful confinement), 323 (causing hurt), 324 (causing hurt by dangerous weapon) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation and threat to cause death or grievous hurt).Police sources said Mr. Selvam, in the complaint, had stated that when he with Corporation officials was attending to a repair on the drinking water pipeline the TA personnel quarrelled with him,dragged and wrongfully confined him into their campus and assaulted him. The police have also registered a case against Mr. Selvam on a complaint from an Army officer under Section 447 (criminal tresspass) and 427 (mischief). Meanwhile, in a statement issued here on Wednesday, Colonel E.S. Sathyanesan, Station Staff Officer, Station Headquarters, Tiruchi said Mr. Selvam had caused damage to the public road opposite to the access road for the training area. Mr. Selvam was disturbing the tranquility of the area by engaging an earthmover.“There was neither any pipeline being repaired nor Mr. Selvam was manhandled or beaten up as claimed. On the contrary, he threatened the military authorities.” Col. Sathyanesan said.
