“DMK will suffer setback if it stays with Congress”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Congress and its allies have suffered serious setbacks in several States including Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh in the last four years owing to faulty economic policies of the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre, N. Varadarajan, State secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said on Thursday.

Reacting to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam treasurer and Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami’s observation that in the Lok Sabha elections, parties such as the CPI(M) would disappear from the scene without any trace, Mr Varadharajan, in a statement, said it was the DMK that was part of the UPA regime and if the party continued its alliance with the Congress for the Lok Sabha elections, it would also meet the same fate.

The CPI (M) had already made it clear that it would not have any truck with those parties that had ties with the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party and it was for the DMK to spell out its position. Still, the “agitated leadership” of the DMK had levelled accusations against the Left parties to justify its relationship with the Congress both at the Centre and in the State.

“The Left parties are for the interests of the nation. The DMK ignores them and stands together with the Congress, which is for the interests of United States,” Mr. Varadarajan said.
