Shyam Nikhil and Nitin share lead after seventh round

Chennai: The top two seeds, Shyam P. Nikhil of Nagercoil and S. Nitin of Salem drew each other in the morning and won in the evening to share lead after the seventh round in the first Modern School FIDE-rating chess tournament being played at Nanganallur on Thursday. Salem’s Nitin slipped in the morning session after being two pawns ahead at one stage against Shyam to allow the top seed to escape with a draw in the rook ending.

Later, in the seventh round in the evening, Nitin defeated Dusthageer Ibrahim of Madurai with the black pieces in 46 moves.

Nitin and Shyam are leading with 6.5 points. Tied for the third place on six points are J. Saranya, N. Surendran and Anwesh Upadhyaya.

Shyam won in 34 moves with the white pieces against Pon N. Krithikha.

Ramnath Bhuvanesh drew with Anwesh Upadhyaya in 40 moves with the white pieces.

Important results (round seven): Shyam Nikhil 6.5 bt Pon N. Krithikha 5.5; Dusthageer Ibrahim 5.5 lost to S. Nitin 6.5; Ramnath Bhuvanesh 5.5 drew with Answesh Upadhyaya 6.

N. Surendran 6 bt Sai Prahlad 5; D.S. Shashaank 5.5 drew with Tejas Ravichandran 5.5.

J. Saranya 6 bt N. Rajkumar 5; R.A. Pradeep Kumar 5.5 bt B. Sekar 4.5; J.S. Daklia 5.5 bt Ramalingam Karthik 4.5. Navalgund Niranjan 5.5 bt R.S. Santhosbaala 4.5; Dinesh Kumar 4.5 lost to J. Arun 5.5.

N. Aadityan 4.5 lost to Ch. Divyasri 5.5; Athul Krishna 4.5 lost to K.C. Krishna Prasad 5.5. Round six: Nitin drew with Shyam Nikhil; Pon N. Krithikha drew with Surendran; Divyasri lost to Dusthageer.
