BRTS: ‘green corridor’ to be developed after road-widening

VIJAYAWADA: The ‘green corridor’ of the proposed Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS), which would connect different parts of the city, would be developed immediately after the completion of the widening of roads and construction of bridges in the route, said Municipal Commissioner P.S. Pradyumna on Thursday.

Addressing a meeting with officials of departments to discuss implementation of BRTS, Mr. Pradyumna said the green corridor would be developed after laying a road on the stretch at Satyanaranapuram where a railway track was removed, besides completing the construction of a bridge connecting C.K. Reddy Road and G.S. Raju Road. He said till the completion of the proposed bridge from Madhuranagar junction to Padavalarevu, Madhuranagar junction road would be connected to Eluru Road through Alluri Seetaramaraju Bridge.

He sought cooperation of all departments for the construction of bus shelters and traffic signals at different points in the city.

Regional Manager of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation’s Krishna region Koteswara Rao said alternative routes would be designed for the city buses based on the route of BRTS buses.

Officials of the South Central Railway, National Highways Authority of India, police and Roads and Buildings were present.

Inaugurated

Meanwhile, local MP L. Rajagopal on Thursday inaugurated a drinking water reservoir at Quddus Nagar near Kedareswarapet, which has a capacity of 1500 kilo litres.

The reservoir was constructed at a cost of Rs. 94.03 lakhs under JNNURM. Mayor Mallika Begum, Municipal Commissioner P.S. Pradyumna, Vijayawada West MLA Sheik Nasar Vali, Deputy Mayor S. Narasa Raju and others were present.

New reservoirs

Mr. Pradyumna said the reservoir would cater to the needs of 50,000 people in Poornanandampeta, Baptistpalem, Pejjonipeta, Quddus Nagar and a few other areas. A second reservoir coming up in the area would be completed by October. The reservoirs coming up at Ajit Singh Nagar, Prakash Nagar, Madhura Nagar and Fish Market would also be completed by October.
