College students on strike

Special Correspondent

KARAIKAL: The students of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture and Research Institute (PAJANCOA and RI) here are now on strike for the past three days demanding the Puducherry Government to shift the new Government engineering college that is functioning in the PAJANCOA campus since last year.

College students told The Hindu on Friday that when the new Government engineering college was started, the Government said that it would function temporarily in the PAJANCOA campus and shifted to a new venue this year.

Now, the second year batch of students had joined the engineering college. The Government is yet to construct a building for the engineering college or find another location for it.

The students pointed out that the increasing number of engineering students would pose a major problem in the campus. They resorted to an indefinite strike, urging the Government to move the engineering college out of the campus.

Meanwhile, S. P. Selvashanmugham, lawyer and convenor of the Karaikal Struggle Group that is demanding union territory status for Karaikal region, urged the Lt. Governor of Puducherry to take immediate steps to solve the problem of the students of PAJANCOA.
