NEW DELHI: Tata Football Academy (TFA) pulled off a surprise and eliminated Salgaocar Club with a 2-0 verdict in the pre-quarterfinal league of the 121st Osian’s Durand Cup football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Monday. Salgaocar needed a draw but that was not to be and the TFA lads showed greater cohesion and discipline to make a mark in this edition of the tournament. The missed penalty would haunt Salgaocar but TFA deserved the credit for the tenacity that brought the best out of the youngsters. Jagtar Singh and P. Deepak scored to ensure TFA’s progress, taking the team’s points tally to seven, one more than Salgaocar. Jagtar shot from the edge of the box when his placement curled in past goalkeeper Proloy Dutta in the 58th minute while Deepak showed his opportunism 10 minutes later by making use of a defensive lapse. Even as Salgaocar tried hard, TFA goalkeeper Jagroop Singh left no loopholes for the opposition to try and exploit. Salgaocar wasted an opportunity in the 73rd minute when Denzil Franco shot the penalty wide. In the other match, Oil and Natural Gas Commission defeated Border Security Force 2-1. Tarif Ahmed scored twice for ONGC, while Kamal Kishore scored for BSF. — Special Correspondent © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
