The announcement that when Coimbatore Government Arts College is converted into a unitary university the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar there will be selected on seniority basis will make any academician wonder whether the government has given a serious thought to the age-old norms of academic excellence and sanctity of higher education. A person who tops the seniority list of the college may not necessarily have the distinction of reputed publications to his credit or even a Ph.D to deserve appointment as the Vice-Chancellor of the proposed unitary university. A person without any academic excellence can top the seniority list. A Registrar can be appointed on seniority basis, but not the VC. VCs for the proposed unitary university must be chosen from retired professors of the college with academic excellence and publications to their credit. The proposal to convert it into a unitary university will in no way improve the quality of education in the college. Therefore, I appeal to the Government to abandon its proposal to convert any of the government colleges in Tamil Nadu into unitary universities. Raj Sethu, Kavundampalayam. Manning trafficI was riding my bike on Avinashi Road recently. At the Krishnammal College junction, I saw a person in civil dress in the middle of the road stopping traffic. The man was standing in my way and I could not stop my vehicle. However, I managed to avert a major accident. I request the authorities concerned to deploy a well-trained person in pucca uniform at the junction to man traffic during peak hours. N. Sabarish, R.S. Puram. Dangerous treeA banyan tree with many long protruding branches is posing grave danger to residents of Navavoor Pirivu. Recently, two of its branches fell. A portion of the second branch is still lying on the roadside. Since the trunk of the tree is supporting many branches, it has become weak, and at any time the tree as a whole or some of its branches may fall. The highways department should immediately take action to cut down the tree or at least its branches. Will the authorities take immediate steps? A.D. Rangaswamy Iyengar, Navavur Pirivu. Man of calibreM. Ponnuswamy is an eminent personality in Coimbatore who has proved his calibre in diverse fields – administration, organisation and management not only in company and business affairs but in sports too (‘Personality of the Week’, Aug. 11). O. Shanmugasundaram, Coimbatore. Service to humanityTwo young women from Scotland, both graduates, came two months ago to work as volunteers at a social organisation for destitute women at Kalaiselvi Karunalayam, Mogappair, Chennai (July 24). This is admirable indeed. Chennai has become their second home. It is service to humanity without barriers of nationality that Swami Vivekananda preached to the world. May their tribe increase! S. Venkatachalam, Kavundampalayam. Dirty streetI should like to bring to the notice of the authorities concerned the pathetic condition of the street right from Edayar Street corner to Krishna Temple. Residents throw garbage in the gutter or on the street. Though the municipality has kept a garbage box the residents don’t put the garbage in it. If three or four dustbins are kept on the street, they will deposit the garbage into them. In the day time it is difficult to walk on Sami Iyer New Street owing to traffic congestion. On one side of the street rows of two-wheelers are parked by merchants. This impedes movement of the residents. The street should be made free by diverting the traffic to Sullivan Street . P.N. Jagannathan, Sami Iyer New Street. Deplorable canteenRecently I went to a college in the heart of the city run by a minority management to get an application for distance education. There I found an open shed which is the college canteen. What I saw there was deplorable. The canteen was unhygienic and rats, cockroaches and flies were scampering all over the place. The food was very bad but the price too high. I request the authorities concerned to house the canteen in a proper building and give quality food to the students. Shanmugam, NGGO Colony. Gas cylinder deliveryI have a HP gas connection. The agency is located in Vadavalli Kalveerampalayam. The customer service there is very poor. The calls made to book gas cylinder do not get proper response. The staff there is irresponsible and cylinders are not delivered properly. I get the cylinder only 40-45 days after the booking. Balamani, Avinashi Road. Auto fareEven after many rounds of talks involving representatives of autorickshaw unions, the public, the police, the Regional Transport Officer and the district administration a solution to the long-pending and vexatious problem of fleecing of people by automen remains elusive. Two State Ministers promised that a satisfactory solution would be found in three months. A year has passed since then but the dispute remains unresolved. K.D. Viswanaathan, Thadagam Road.
