KSLTA has nothing to do with Bangalore Open cancellation

Bangalore: C.S. Sunder Raju, Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association secretary, has clarified that the association had nothing to do with the cancellation of the ATP Bangalore Open that was initially scheduled for a September 8 start. In a press release, Mr. Sunder said that reports in a section of the media that claimed that the KSLTA had petitioned to the ATP to cancel the event owing to security concerns were false.

“The KSLTA wishes to clarify that it was not involved in the organisation or cancellation of the ATP Bangalore Open. The event was owned and was to be executed by BIG LIVE, a part of Adlabs Films Ltd. which is an Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group company.

“KSLTA was only approached to provide the Kingfisher Signature Tennis Stadium as a venue which was agreed to,” said Mr. Sunder in the press release.

Meanwhile, highly placed sources in BIG LIVE admitted that the company had sought the shelving of the tournament for the time being owing to heightened security perceptions in the region. The sources, however, reiterated that the company hopes to conduct the event at the same venue next year.

Centre-half Mani’s three strikes and a brace each by left-in Darshan and Kariappa, helped Sports School Ponnampet register a facile 8-2 win over Padriyad, Tellicherry in their last Group ’A’ encounter and qualify for the semifinals in the High School boys section of the Andolana Cup Invitation hockey tournament played at Mysore on Wednesday. Muthappa was the other scorer for the winner while Nithin and Kusha reduced the margin for the loser.

Best School, Bellary topped Group ’A’ with an all win record (4 played & 4 win) while DYSS, Bellary topped Group ’B’ with four wins. Bagalkot finished runner-up in Group ’B’ (three wins and one loss) and qualified for the semifinals.

High school Girls: Third Place: Demonstration HS bt Good Shepherd ’B’ 3-1 (tie-breaker). Primary Boys: Third Place: Cauvery HPS bt DMS 3-2 (tie-breaker).

Former champion Postal registered its first win in four matches with a 21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-20 scoreline against Sports Hostel (Bangalore) in a State ‘A’ division volleyball league match at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium courts here on Wednesday.

In the other matches, Jindal scored a 25-21, 25-20, 25-18 victory over BEL while ITI beat SAI 25-15, 25-19, 25-22.
