Vaigai flood warning likely

MADURAI: The water level in the Periyar dam has risen by nearly a foot in the last 24 hours till Thursday morning. It was inching towards 66 feet, when the first flood warning would be issued for people living along the banks of the river in five districts.

The level that stood at 64.83 feet touched 65.62 feet on Thursday morning. The flow in the reservoir was 2,111 cusecs. Public Works Department officials expected the level to touch 66 feet by late night. Though no water was released from the dam, the Vaigai river had good flow since Tuesday with its catchment areas downstream the dam experiencing showers every day. The flow in the river was 2,864 cusecs, as recorded at Viraghanoor dam.
