Anvesh pulls off a surprise

TIRUPATI: Unseeded V. Anvesh of Nalgonda created a flutter ousting the seventh seed Anil Kumar Raju of Warangal 21-18, 18-21, 21-12 in the men’s singles first round of the AP State senior badminton championship at the Sri Srinivasa Sports Complex here on Thursday.

Anvesh, who took an 11-7 lead to win the first game, saw a determined Anil Kumar, bouncing back to draw parity in the second. In the decider, Avnesh was off a flying start and took an early 6-0 lead to ensure the exit of Anil.

Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by B. Karunakar Reddy, Chairman, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam.

Saketh, Samuel shine

R.N.S. Saketh of Little Angels School and Samuel Raj of ZPP High School (Thotada) had a five-wicket haul each on the first day of the district inter-school tournament at Ukkunagaram on Thursday. Saketh’s effort went in vain as his team lost to Visvodaya Public School by 14 runs while Samuel Raj bowled Thotada school to a 26-run win over ZPP HS, Dibbidi.

The scores: Visvodaya Public School 53 in 16.4 overs (R.N.S. Saketh five for 20) bt Little Angles School 39 in 19.5 overs (Yadav Kumar four for 14); ZPP HS, Thotada 73 in 14.2overs (Satish Kumar four for 24) bt ZPP HS, Dibbidi 47 in 6.3 overs (Samuel Raj five for 17).
