VLB, Bannari set up title clash

Coimbatore: Host VLB Janakiammal College of Engineering and Technology defeated Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology (Pollachi) by eight wickets and marched into the final of the Anna University Zone-7 inter-Collegiate cricket tournament at the VLB grounds, here on Thursday.

After restricting the visitor to 110 for nine in 25 overs, the host scored the required runs with eight wickets to spare.

In the final, VLB will lock horns with Bannari Amman Institute of Technology (Sathyamangalam), which dispatched Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College by four wickets.

The scores: Semifinals: Dr. Mahalingam (Pollachi) 110 for nine in 25 overs (P. Sivaguru four for 12) lost to VLB Janakiammal 112 for two in 21.5 overs (Senthil 46); Sri Ramakrishna EC (Cbe) 89 in 24.5 overs lost to Bannari Amman 90 for six in 19.1 overs.

Nirmala College dominates

Nirmala College for Women emerged the overall champion in the Bharathiar University inter-Collegiate powerlifting and weightlifting tournament for women recently.

St. Joseph’s EC posts win

St. Joseph’s Engineering College (Chennai) beat GRD College (Coimbatore) 79-77 to reach the semifinals of the Bertram basketball tournament at Loyola College in Chennai on Friday.

Zonal sports meet

The 51st Republic Day and the 26th Bharathiar Day zonal sports meet for boys will be held at the Government Polytechnic grounds on September 2 at 7 a.m.

Coimbatore Marathon

The Coimbatore Marathon 2008, organised by the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Texcity and CRPF in association with Ambika Cotton Mills Limited, will be flagged off from the Nehru Stadium on August 30 at 7 a.m.
