A ring road will now decongest Avanashi Road, Sathyamangalam Road and Mettupalayam Road and other core city roads.

Coimbatore: The State Highways Department is planning to develop Peelamedu–Kalapatti-Saravanampatty and Kurumbapalayam Road into a ring road to decongest Avanashi Road, Sathyamangalam Road and Mettupalayam Road. Highways sources told The Hindu that the 12-km stretch from SITRA Junction in Peelamedu would run through Kalapatti and join Sathyamangalam Road at Saravanampatty and then it would join Mettuppalayam Road at Kurumbapalayam.

It would help divert vehicles going out of the city, especially those entering the city on Avanashi Road but bound for Sathyamangalam and beyond and Mettuppalayam and beyond, the sources said. At present vehicles bound for Sathyamangalam Road and Mettuppalayam Road have to go through Avanashi Road, Gandhipuram and the congested stretch of Sathyamangalam Road till Saravanampatty and till Thudialur on Mettuppalayam Road.

The highways department will take up work to develop the existing road for nearly 12 km and at a few places the existing single lane roads are being converted into two-lane roads. The total outlay for the work will be Rs. 3.3 crore. National Highways authorities will spend Rs.130 lakh from the Central Road Fund to improve the Kalapatti Road–Avanashi Road Junction to facilitate smooth flow of traffic at the bifurcating point.

Official sources said the authorities had plans to extend this road to connect Mettuppalayam Road with Thadagam Road, Marudhamalai Road, Siruvani Road, Palakkad Road and Pollachi Road to make the circle complete so that the vehicles for outside the city need not enter it.
