This Day That Age
The United States State Department has conveyed an urgent message to Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, on the “gravity” of the situation in Formosa Strait, diplomatic sources said on August 29. The message was handed over to Mr. Hammarskjoeld by the American Charge d’Affaires, in Amman. It related to the question of calling the Security Council into session to discuss the Far East situation. A U.S. spokesman said that the heavy U.S. cruiser, Los Angeles, had sailed from Long Beach, California, to join the Seventh Fleet in the West Pacific. It was also confirmed that the aircraft-carrier, Midway, had left Pearl Harbour on August 28 to join the Seventh Fleet, the Naval force patrolling the Formosa Strait. The decision to strengthen U.S. Naval forces in the Far East has resulted from China’s threat to invade Matsu and Quemoy, held by the Formosan regime. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
