State athletics team trials

HYDERABAD: Selection trials will be held at the GMC Balayogi Athletics Stadium, Gachibowli, on August 31 to pick the State squad for the National Open championships at Kochi from September 8 to 11.

Entries can be sent to Prof. K. Ranga Rao, Secretary, A.P. Amateur Athletics Association, 12-13-373, Street No. 18, Sadashivnagar Colony, Tarnaka, Secunderabad.

OU to felicitate medallists

The Osmania University will felicitate its medallists who brought laurels in the all-India inter-University competitions for the years 2006-07 and 2007-8 at the Faculty Club, OU Campus, on August 30 at 10 a.m.

Prof. T. Tirupathi Rao, Vice-Chancellor, OU, will distribute the cash awards.

Medallists must report at the venue at 9.30 a.m. on the said day.

Rajendar Singh BSC bags title

Rajendar Singh of Boys Sports Company clocked 2:06.6 minutes to clinch the boys’ under-16 years 800 metres title in the Hyderabad district athletics championships at the Osmania University grounds on Friday.

M. Laxman Reddy, Chairman, M.L.R. Institute of Technology, was the chief guest.

DPS enters last four

Delhi Public School scored a 114-run win over Chaitanya Public School to enter the semifinals of the district inter-School under-16 cricket tournament at the Ukku Stadium, in Visakhapatnam on Friday.

Zinc School defeated Kakatiya Public School by 25 runs at the Trishna grounds to make the last four. Zinc School meets DPS and Viswodaya Public School takes on ZPP High School (Thotada) in the semifinals on Saturday.

Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 (Uppal) won the Dhyan Chand Memorial hockey tournament for schools with a 4-3 win in sudden death over Hyderabad Public School (Ramanthapur) in Hyderabad.

The event was organised to commemorate the birth anniversary of the hockey legend.

Syed Mustafa passes away

Syed Mustafa, former assistant secretary of the Hyderabad Hockey Association, passed away here on Friday after a cardiac arrest.

He was also the coach of Osmania University for more than two decades and chairman of the umpires committee of the HHA.

The HHA expressed condolences to the bereaved family members at a specially convened meeting here.

Former India player M.P. Ganesh expressed shock at the demise of Mustafa.

In a message to the local media here, Ganesh recalled that he was a batch-mate of Mustafa and also played under his captaincy for Services.

“He was very dedicated to the sport and his death is a big loss to the sport,” he said in his message.

Easy for AP Police

AP Police recorded an easy 80-30 win over Belly Boys in the Talasani Sandeep Yadav Memorial basketball tournament at the Nehru Nagar Playground in Hyderabad.
