Declared joint winners

VIJAYAWADA: Vizag and Nellore were declared joint winners in the Andhra senior hockey inter-district tournament which concluded at Gudur on Monday, according to information reaching here.

The teams were goalless at the end of regulation time and no play was possible during extra-time due to bad light.

Earlier, in the second semifinal, Nellore defeated East Godavari 5-3 in the tie-breaker.

Kesava Reddy (60) and Shabbir (58) helped Kurnool score 169 for seven in 90 overs against Nellore in the ACA South Zone under-14 inter-district tournament, for the Fr. Vincent Ferrer Trophy, at Anantapur. No play was possible owing to rain in the match between Kadapa and Anantapur at PTC grounds.

The scores: Kurnool 169 for seven in 90 overs (Kesava Reddy 60, Shabbir 58, Manoj four for 38) vs. Nellore.

Krishna scored 225 in 67.2 overs in reply to West Godavari’s 70 in 23.1 overs in the ACA Central Zone under-14 inter-district tournament, for the Nagalla Lingaiah memorial Trophy, at the IGMC Stadium here on Monday.

In the other match, Prakasam piled up 222 in 82 overs against Guntur.

The tournament was inaugurated by Dr. K.V. Vara Prasad, Managing Director, Help Hospitals.

The scores: West Godavari 70 in 23.1 overs (K. Bhima Rao three for two, A. Rajesh three for 13) vs. Krishna 225 in 67.2 overs (U.R.C. Goutham Varma 68, B. Amaleswara Rao five for 41, V. Gangadhar four for 72).

Prakasam 222 in 82 overs (E.V. Kalyan 96, V. Mahesh four for 38, P.S. Ravi Teja three for 27) vs. Guntur 72 for two in 13 overs.

Vijayawada’s M.R. Lalith Babu emerged champion with nine points in the Andhra senior chess tournament at Nellore recently, his coach Murali Krishna said here on Monday.

Lalith has qualified to play in the National ‘B’ championship to be held at Goa from September 15.
