Humpy advances, Harika out

NEW DELHI: Second seed K. Humpy moved into the Women’s world chess championship quarterfinals after winning the second game of her pre-quarterfinal clash with Hungary’s Hoang Thanh Trang at Nalchik, Russia, on Friday.

The 38-move triumph with white pieces gave Humpy a 1.5-0.5 victory in the two-game match.

In this Dutch Defence game, Humpy was at her clinical best as she launched a lethal kingside offensive that brooked no opposition from her experienced rival.

However, World junior girls’ champion D. Harika made her exit from the premier competition after surrendering to Armenia’s Lilit Mkrtchian in the second game.

In this Sicilian Najdorf game lasting 42 moves, Harika lost two pawns early and tried in vain to make a fight of it.

The first game between the two players had ended in a draw in 83 moves on Thursday.
