Events under floodlights at National Open athletics

KOCHI: Some of the premier events of the forthcoming 48th National Open athletics championship will be held under lights at the Maharaja’s College here.

“This is the first time we’ll be having athletics under lights in Kerala,” said Tony Danial, the championship’s Chief Coordinator here on Friday.

“We’re doing it on an experimental basis…if this clicks, we’ll have the all-India varsities meet here in December under floodlights too.”

Nearly 900 athletes from 28 teams, including State and institutional sides, will figure in the four-day event which begins on September 8.

The Nationals comes to Kerala after 23 years.

The organisers have planned a torch relay, featuring Olympians and Asian stars, on September 7.

Vice-Admiral Sunil Kumar Damle, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, will inaugurate the meet. — Principal Correspondent
