| Remodelling of New Delhi railway station involves a gigantic operation |

NEW DELHI: To enhance train operational facilities at the New Delhi railway station, Northern Railway is carrying out large-scale remodelling work involving installation of a new route relay interlocking 1,278 routes.
To facilitate the gigantic venture, the station is going to remain “non-interlocked” till September 14.
As a result, 62 trains passing through the station have been cancelled, 126 terminated short of destination (which will originate from there) and 50 trains diverted to run on alternative routes for the period.
According to a Northern Railway spokesperson, the complete remodelling of New Delhi station would involve installation of new route relay interlocking, , the largest on Indian Railways.
“This relay room will be in place of the existing British route relay interlocking system with 690 routes. There would be additions and alternations of 125 routes at the existing Delhi Junction,” said the spokesperson on Saturday.
The remodelling work will involve a series of complicated operations: resetting the triangle area of the Delhi yard at the New Delhi end, dismantling of 34 turn-outs, casting of 16 foundations, erection of masts/posts, linking and insertion of 21 turn-outs and signals telecommunication.
After the remodelling work is completed, there would be a 33 per cent increase in platform handling work at the station.
Independent corridor“The bottleneck in the Sadar area will be removed and there will be six lines in place of the existing three at the Sadar Bazar end of the New Delhi station, making an independent corridor for reception and despatch of trains to and from Delhi Junction/Delhi Kishanganj, Subzi Mandi and Delhi Sarai Rohilla stations.
“Two additional lines at the Tilak Bridge end will be connected with the New Delhi yard. Thus there will be six lines between New Delhi and Tilak Bridge in place of four so far,” said the spokesperson.
There will be two island platforms at the New Delhi station making for a total of 16 in place of the existing 12 platforms.
