Vipin Kumar enters second round

BATHINDA: World cadet champion Vipin Kumar quelled a strong challenge from Paramjeet Singh to reach the second round of the light flyweight category in the 55th National boxing championship at the Giani Zail Singh Stadium here on Sunday.

Vipin, more skilful than his rival, emerged a 9-6 winner. Paramjeet threw punches relentlessly in an effort to force his opponent from Uttrakhand on the defensive but Vipin’s technique helped him evade the blows and garner valuable points at regular intervals.

After two rounds of neck-and-neck fight, Vipin got two crucial penalty points which helped him gain a vital lead in the third round.

The Chandigarh-based Paramjeet went on the offensive final round but Vipin raised his lead by one more point to ensure a berth in the next round.

In another light flyweight bout, Manwar Hussain (Railways) outplayed

In a one-sided bout, Doha Asian Games bronze medallist Sanjay Kishan Kolte (Services) decimated M. Krishna (Chhattisgarh) 15-0.
