Thousands witness chariot procession at Velankanni

NAGAPATTINAM: Thousands of pilgrims and devotees from various parts of the country and abroad took part in the chariot procession of Our Lady of Health at Shrine Basilica at Velankanni on Sunday night.

The event was part of the 11-day annual feast festival that began on August 29.

A large number of dignitaries also witnessed the procession.

The district administration, the church and the police made elaborate arrangements. Special trains and buses were operated from various parts of the State. The festival concludes on Monday, with the celebration of the birthday of Blessed Virgin Mary.

Church authorities said nearly 20 lakh pilgrims attended the festival this year. Holy Mass and the blessing of the sick with the statue of Our Lady of Health were conducted in the main shrine.
