GROWTH TRAJECTORY: Small and medium enterprises in the Tirupur region are set to flourish as a technical textiles manufacturing zone will come up near Tirupur. TIRUPUR: The production of technical textiles is set to get a boost, with Hydra Consulting Services Private Limited, Bangalore, together with the Textiles Committee and the Knit Cloth Manufacturers Association, plans to open a ‘technical textiles manufacturing zone’ near here. At present, India is importing $5 billion worth of technical textile products such as composite leather, sanitary napkins and diapers to meet the domestic demand, which has been growing at 8 per cent a year. So, the Rs.150-crore zone—planned to be established on 200 acres during the 11th Plan under the cluster development programme of the Textiles Committee—will be a boon for the small and medium enterprises in the region to switch from conventional textiles to value-added technical textiles. To house 35 unitsSampath Kasirajan, Managing Director, Hydra Consulting Services, told The Hindu that the zone would house 35 small and medium units and have common facilities for research and development, prototyping and testing. Hydra Consulting Services has launched a feasibility study to gauge the availability of raw materials, the readiness of market and the funds needed by the units to diversify into technical textiles. The Textiles Committee of the Union Ministry of Textiles, a strategic partner in the joint venture, will help the units get good market linkages. Teams have been formed under D. Dhandapani, Deputy Director, and G. Venugopal, Cluster Development Executive, of the Textiles Committee, to launch capacity-building campaigns to help the units gear up for the project. Ahill Ratinasamy, president of the Knit Cloth Manufacturers Association, views the project with great optimism. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
