On Singur

The role of West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi in helping to resolve the Singur stalemate is commendable. By creating an atmosphere for a dialogue between the State government and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, he played an important role in breaking the ice.

The news that the Trinamool Congress has agreed to lift the siege outside the Tata Motors project site comes as a whiff of fresh air. The credit for ending the stalemate should go to Mr. Gandhi who, with his persuasive skills and relentless efforts, brought the government and the Opposition to the negotiating table.

Singur seems to be heading for a happy ending, with both Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Ms Banerjee coming together to sort out the issue. Credit is due to Mr. Gandhi who gave a clarion call to both parties to come to an amicable settlement, when the closure of the Tata Motors small car project looked imminent.

We often see a Governor playing an unwarranted role in politics but we rarely see a Governor making an earnest effort to resolve an issue. Let us hope all Governors will emulate Mr. Gandhi and work with the government and the Opposition to arrive at a consensus on controversial issues.
