Judicial custody for govt. officials

Both belong to Social Welfare Department

They were arrested by Anti-Corruption Branch

New Delhi: Two senior Delhi Government officials, arrested by Anti-Corruption Branch for committing a fraud in purchase of materials for shelters run by the Social Welfare department, were on Tuesday sent to judicial custody by a court here.

Rajender Prasad Singh, 59, and Vimla Chaudhary, 53, were produced before Special Judge A S Yadav soon after their arrest and remanded to 14 days judicial custody.

Delhi Police Anti-Corruption Branch had registered two FIRs against the officials of Social Welfare Department and another person on June 24 for alleged misappropriation of funds meant for people below poverty line.

Mr. Singh was working as district officer while Ms. Chaudhary was superintendent in the department.

The others named as accused are Ravi Goel, Sanjay Gihar, Judu Joseph and R K Sharma.

The cases were registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act and Indian Penal Code accusing them of committing conspiracy, forgery, cheating and other offences.

According to the police, the purchases were made through limited tenders by the use of fake quotations rather than open tenders.

Other methods of fraud like inflating the number of inmates and bogus claims had also allegedly come to light. -- PTI
