Vasan impresses States to modernise statistical system

NEW DELHI: Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation G. K. Vasan on Tuesday called for strengthening the country’s data collection mechanism and noted that the Centre’s initiatives aimed at according stability and credibility to the system would bear fruit only if similar steps are taken by the States.

Speaking at the national conference of State ministers in-charge of statistics here, Mr. Vasan said the Centre was considering a proposal for setting up a ‘States statistical system’ through a Centrally-sponsored scheme in the XI Plan at an estimated cost of Rs. 705 crore. The Minister pointed out that in the decentralised statistical system, national statistics, in many cases, were derived from the State level.

Therefore, as there was a need for States to have a separate Department of Statistics along with a strong statistical machinery at local levels, Mr. Vasan appealed to all State governments to consider the setting up of statistical commissions to oversee their systems and assist the National Commission in realising the common objectives.

Crucial indicators

Speaking on the occasion, National Statistical Commission Chairman Suresh Tendulkar said that official statistics provided crucial indicators of the functioning of the society and the economy.

Data gaps

Since persistence of data gaps was a drag on the formulation of appropriate policies, the country required a statistical system commensurate with the needs of a vibrant democratic society and a fast-growing economy in the 21st century.

The national conference has been convened to deliberate on important issues related to strengthening of the statistical system, including imparting independence and impartiality to official statistics.
