Pinarayi flays corporate media

KANNUR: Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has accused the ‘corporate media’ of failure to highlight adverse impacts of the Indo-U.S. nuclear agreement.

Inaugurating the town bureau of Deshabhimani daily here on Wednesday, Mr. Vijayan said the corporate media had failed to highlight the long-term impacts of the United Progressive Alliance government’s decision to “remain submissive to the imperialist designs” of the U.S. He called upon the media to highlight the scenario emerging as a result of the nuclear deal.

Attacking the UPA government for “surrendering the country’s independent foreign policy,” he said the ongoing moves to operationalise the nuclear agreement were aimed at bringing the country closer to the U.S. which was trying to enforce its hegemony over countries in Asia.

Observing that the U.S. did not like China’s emergence as a major economic power in Asia, Mr. Vijayan said the U.S. was apprehensive of closer tie-ups among India, China and Russia.

The nuclear deal was part of the U.S. plan to turn India into its strategic partner, he added.

He said External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s statement that India would continue its moratorium on nuclear tests amounted to a deviation from its traditional and independent foreign policy. It was this statement that paved the way for the waiver at the Nuclear Suppliers Group, he added.
