Four-storey dwelling units for squatters

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi will construct 2,224 four-storey dwelling units for relocation of squatters belonging to economically weaker sections.

Making the announcement, Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra said the project would cost the civic body Rs.65.28 crore. Construction of these units is expected to be completed within two years.

Ms. Mehra said 1,200 units would be constructed in Rohini and another 1,024 in Dwarka. Each storey of these complexes would have a common toilet block. Land at these sites has been made available to the Slum and JJ Department of the MCD.

“Due to scarcity of land in Delhi, the MCD has been contemplating for long to rehabilitate the slum dwellers in multi-storey dwelling units. Recently the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission scheme was introduced by the Union Government under the Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Ministry for slum dwellers. The Slum and JJ Department had received requests from various land owning agencies for relocation of 16,307 beneficiaries from various parts of Delhi,” Ms. Mehra added.
