25 PHCs to be upgraded

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: Twenty-five of the 45 primary health centres in the district will be upgraded as 24-hour centres.

Other primary health centres have already started functioning round the clock since last year.

The move comes in the wake of the Government’s decision to make all the 1,421 PHCs in the State 24-hour health care centres to provide a fillip to rural health services.

While 25 PHCs had adequate infrastructure, others would require about a hundred para-medical staff to meet the demand, said the Deputy Director, Department of Public Health Services, V. Veerapandiyan.

Seventy-five staff nurses and 50 sanitary workers will be posted at the PHCs that will begin its round-the-clock delivery services from September 15.

Three staff nurses and two sanitary workers will be deputed to each upgraded primary health centre next week.

The 25 PHCs are currently functioning without staff nurses.

Round-the-clock first-aid services during medical emergencies will be provided at the health centres. Normal deliveries will be handled at these centres and those that need surgical interventions will be referred to government hospitals. Ante-natal and post-natal care will be part of the services.
