Women reception officers in all 39 suburban police stations

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: Women reception officers were posted in all 39 police stations of the Chennai Suburban Commissionerate on Wednesday.

Participating in a function at the Commissionerate Headquarters in St. Thomas Mount, Director-General of Police K.P. Jain said the initiative was part of several “people-friendly measures to help people in very possible way.”

About five years ago, the Chennai City Police introduced a similar system of receptionist.

However, it was not followed up and visitors to police stations had to meet the personnel directly.

The Suburban Commissionerate has taken a lead in reintroducing it, an official said.

Suburban Commissioner S.R. Jangid said the women reception officers, all in the rank of constables, were selected after a detailed interview and trained in different aspects that were mandatory for receptionists. They were trained in handling visitors by professionals, including academics and members of non-governmental organisations.

A press note said the officers would be available at police stations between 9 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m from Monday to Saturday.
