CHENNAI: Nearly 1,140 students of various Corporation schools in the city who were diagnosed with eye problems were provided with free spectacles at a function organised by the Chennai Corporation on Thursday.

Mayor M.Subramanian distributed about Rs.1.50 lakh worth spectacles to the students at the Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School on Madhavaram High Road, Perambur. Nearly 12,000 students of 10 schools participated in the eye camps conducted earlier this year jointly by Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal, Lions International District 324 A1 and Rotary International District 3230.

Similar camps would be conducted in other Corporation schools during October and November.

Speaking at the function, Mr.Subramanian said the camps were being conducted for those students who otherwise could not afford such annual health check-ups. Besides the eye camps, about 18,000 students were screened for dental problems too.

He also highlighted the heart surgery assistance scheme for which 18 students were identified in the Corporation schools. Surgeries have been performed on four of them. Besides the assistance of Rs.70, 000 from the State government, the students were provided with Rs.50,000 by the Corporation, he said.

Pointing out that the quality education was being provided at Corporation schools, he lauded the Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School, Perambur, for producing good results in public examinations. There has been an increase in admission of students in the school due to quality education.

Deputy Mayor R.Sathya Bama, Sankara Eye Hospital secretary S.Viswanathan and Corporation Deputy Commissioner (Education) Anu George participated in the programme.
