Law and order in State well maintained: Karunanidhi

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday expressed the hope that recommendations of the third police commission would benefit the families of the police officials and personnel as well.

Addressing a function organised to give away President of India Medals and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Medals to the police officials, the Chief Minister said Tamil Nadu had implemented majority of the recommendations of the first and second police commissions.

“The government has received the recommendations of the third police commission. If the officials study and take action on the report, it would benefit the families of the police officials and personnel,” he said.

Stating that a barring a few stray incidents, the law and order in Tamil Nadu was well maintained, Mr Karunanidhi recalled his meeting with Sub-Inspectors who were undergoing training in the police academy at Oonamanchery. As many as 625 men and 118 were being trained, he said.

The Chief Minister said he always had a soft corner for the police department even when he was not in power.

President of India Medals were given to 77 officials and policemen and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Medals were given to 164.

Police personnel working in vigilance and anti-corruption, fire and rescue services, prison and home guards and civil defence departments were given awards for their gallantry, distinguished service, meritorious service, correctional service, outstanding devotion to duty, excellence in investigation, excellence in finger print science, technical and specialised service and excellence in public service.

The awardees included ADGP K.R. Shyam Sundar, City Police Commissioner R. Sekar, DIGs A.K.Viswanathan, M. Ravi and Karunasagar

Director General of Police K.P. Jain welcomed the gathering.
