Transgenders’ population to be enumerated

Staff Reporter

Tuticorin: The Government has chalked out a plan to enumerate the transgender population in Tuticorin district.

Collector R. Palaniyandi said here on Saturday that it was one of the important steps taken by the government for the welfare of transgenders, who were fighting for recognition in the society.

After the initial stage of enumeration process in Tuticorin, Kovilpatti, Vilathikulam and Tiruchendur would be covered. Employment opportunities would be generated for transgenders with basic educational qualifications, he said.

Demands

The transgenders came to the Collectorate here to air their grievances. Their demands include provision of ration cards, separate identity cards, voter ID cards, passport, life insurance scheme, bank accounts, reservation quota under women category, job assurance, free housing and awareness programme on transgender issues.

They also urged the government to initiate stringent action against those who ill treat and misbehave with them.
