Separate chamber planned for Public Prosecutors

CHENNAI: The State government will take steps to ensure that public prosecutors get separate chambers in sessions and district court buildings to be constructed in future, said Durai Murugan, Law and Public Works Department Minister, here on Saturday.

Speaking at a function to launch the website of the Directorate of Prosecution (DOP), the Minister said the conclave of public prosecutors was arranged with the intention of having better interaction among them.

The Minister said the demands of the DOPs would be considered, especially those relating to promotional opportunities and increase in wages.

Home Secretary S. Malathy, who launched the official logo of the DOP, underscored the importance of effective coordination between the Police Department and the DOP.

She regretted that there were more than 4 lakh criminal cases pending in the State.

She noted that one of the recommendations of the Third Police Commission was to ensure promotional avenues for public prosecutors and to have more in-service training, especially for tackling cyber crime.

Director of DOP, M.K. Jha, said special efforts had been taken by the DOP by incorporating a new software on the website ( www.prosecution.tn.gov.in) to focus on case management, ensuring more refresher courses for public prosecutors and more training programmes in tie-up with a law institute.

S. Kandasamy, DOP, Chennai, presented a memorandum listing out a charter of seven-point demands to the Minister. A.K. Jamal, DOP, Thanjavur, said the website would contain details of pending trial case for review and analysis by public prosecutor and judiciary with a common data base.
