Fresh clashes in Srinagar

SRINAGAR: Even as curfew continued in Baramulla and Shopian districts in Kashmir on Saturday, fresh clashes took place in Srinagar, where a strike was observed in many parts against Friday’s incident.

(Two people were killed in Baramulla and Shopian in firing by the police and the CRPF on Friday.)

The police, with the help of the Central Reserve Police Force and the Army, was enforcing curfew at Shopian and Baramulla. In Baramulla, a group tried to defy the regulation in old town but the security forces chased it away. However, tension was palpable in both towns. The Army carried out a flag march in Shopian.

Inspector-General B. Srinivas visited Shopian and held meetings with citizens, seeking their cooperation in restoring normality.

Kupwara was also reeling under tension as the body of a youth from Halmatpora, who was killed in the Baramulla firing, was taken to his house.

Though the Hurriyat-sponsored Coordination Committee had called for a normal working day, a group of angry youths took to the streets, forcing a shutdown at Maisuma, Lal Chowk, Regal Chowk and in other areas here. They took out a procession from Maisuma against the alleged use of “brute force” during Friday’s procession led by JKLF chief Yasin Malik.
