Anand draws with Topalov

NEW DELHI: World champion Viswanathan Anand drew with leader Veselin Topalov in 41 moves in the ninth and penultimate round of the Grand Slam Finals chess tournament at Bilbao, Spain, on Friday. On a day when all three games proved indecisive to leave the standings unchanged, Topalov raised his tally to 14 points and retained his one-point lead over Armenia’s Levon Aronian.

Anand shared the fifth spot with Azerbaijan’s Teimour Radjabov at seven points.

Ukraine’s Vassily Ivanchuk drew with Aronian in 69 moves of Ruy Lopez in the longest game of the day. Radjabov proved equal to Norway’s Magnus Carlsen in 53 moves following the opening sequence of Caro Kann.

Ninth round: Viswanathan Anand (7) drew with Veselin Topalov (Bul, 14); Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 12) drew with Levon Aronian (Arm, 13); Teimour Radjabov (7) drew with Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 12).
