Police trying to find out configuration of bombs

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi police are trying to find out if the bombs that went off at busy market places on Saturday were configured using materials procured from the Capital or its neighbourhood.

“The signature of the bombs used here matches with those used in the Ahmedabad and Jaipur blasts. A bomb found at India Gate was configured in a wooden block with cavities,” said a police officer.

In one of the cavities, nails and ball-bearings had been stuffed. Ammonium nitrate was kept in another cavity and the whole contraption was taped. Two detonators and a 9-volt battery were used in the circuit that was linked to a table clock, which acted as a timer device. It is learnt that a similar circuitry was found in another bomb found near Regal cinema.

The third one that was found in Central Park was destroyed through controlled detonation by the National Security Guard. “A bomb can be configured in different ways if the assembler is aware of the chain of initiation of an improvised explosive device,” said the police officer, adding that efforts were on to find out from where the suspects had bought the bomb-assembling materials.
