Corrections and clarifications

>>The first sentence in the introduction of “‘We want to encourage joint ‘beacon Projects’ between science and industry’” (Op-Ed, September 16, 2008) was “The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) in Chennai was the first of the IITs to be established in the country.” A number of readers point out that IIT Kharagpur was the first. The Science Correspondent clarifies that it was an error, but IIT Madras was the first to be established with financial and technical assistance from developed countries under bilateral agreements. IIT Kharagpur was established with no outside assistance and IIT Bombay was set up with financial and technical assistance from UNESCO, which in turn utilised, in large measure, Russian expertise and technical assistance. Technical assistance was also provided by other countries through the UNESCO system, but to a lesser degree.

>>The sixth paragraph in a report “Trade with China may exceed target” (“Business” page, September 13, 2008) was “Describing it as a great success story, he said China and India needed each other and the economic strengths of the two companies were very much complementary.” It should have been “two countries”.

>>The last paragraph in a report “Legislation to check frequent hartals” (Kerala, September 13, 2008, page 1) was “Those who hold hartals or bandhs in violation of the restrictions and undertakings will be slapped with a six-month simple punishment or a fine of up to Rs.50,000.” It should have been “simple imprisonment”. (The error was rectified in the Kochi edition.)
