CPI leader murdered in Nagapattinam

Mariappan and a few others were looking after the financial affairs of a temple in the village


NAGAPATTINAM: Mariappan (55), former president of Thazhayamazhai panchayat in Tirukkuvalai taluk in Nagapattinam district and local leader of the Communist Party of India, was murdered by a group of persons in the village on Monday night.

Police sources said that Mariappan and a few others of Thazhayamazhai village were looking after the financial affairs of the Ayyanar temple in the village.

Mariappan had sought detailed accounts from the others, which led to a quarrel between them. Mariappan was hacked in the village and died on way to government hospital here.

Road roko

A large number of CPI workers on Tuesday staged road roko near the government hospital, demanding that the police arrest the killers.

The police are hunting for Panneer, Subramaniam and Balasubramaniam.
