Held for illegally carrying US dollars

CHENNAI: Officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs at the Anna international terminal arrested a Hong Kong-bound passenger who attempted to illegally carry $34,500.

The passenger was not in possession of any documents for legal export of foreign currency.

An official release from the Customs stated that the officials examined the hand baggage of the passenger, who hailed from West Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. The search resulted in the recovery of US $20,000. Further check on the passenger resulted in the recovery of US $14,500.

The passenger later admitted to the Customs authorities that he was carrying the amount for paying it to his supplier in Hong Kong. Further investigation is on. — Special Correspondent
