JNU to host seminar on poverty eradication

NEW DELHI: After paying tributes to the Father of the Nation with the Satyagraha Centenary International Conference last year, Jawaharlal Nehru University will this time round deliberate on one of the many issues close to Mahatma Gandhi’s heart – poverty eradication.

The Centre for the Study of Social Systems at the School of Social Sciences in collaboration with the Indian chapter of Chronic Poverty Research Centre at the Indian Institute of Public Administration is organising a three-day international seminar here on “Eradicating Chronic Poverty in India: Policy Issues and Challenges” from October 1.

“The Millennium Development Goals and the Five Year Plans dealing with policies, plans and programmes particularly of poverty, education and gender cannot be met without addressing the issue of chronic poverty. The policies designed for the transitory poor cannot be of much use for those trapped in chronic poverty because of their heterogeneity,” said JNU faculty member Anand Kumar, convenor of the seminar.

“This also becomes an occasion to pay homage and tribute to Mahatma Gandhi who fought tirelessly throughout his lifetime for uplifting the downtrodden,” he added.

The seminar has been divided into nine technical sessions. About 100 speakers from different parts of India, South Asia, Africa and Europe will present papers on various poverty-related issues. Apart from academicians and activists, policy makers from different Union Ministries and Governments of BIMARU (Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh) States are also likely to speak at the seminar.
