Exhibition at Lalit Kala Akademi captures evolution of technology in photography

COLOURFUL GALLERY: P.C. Sreeram views the pictures on display at the All India Salon of Photography that opened in Chennai on Wednesday.

Chennai: A melange of photographs of landscapes, people and wildlife in classic monochrome and brilliant colour are on view at the All India Salon of Photography that opened at Lalit Kala Akademi in the city on Wednesday.

Cinematographer P.C. Sreeram inaugurated the exhibition organised by the Photographic Society of Madras to commemorate its 150th year. After viewing the photographs, Mr. Sreeram said, “The images have left a lasting impression on me. Such exhibitions show the evolution of technology in photography.”

The photographs displayed are entries for a national competition organised by the Photographic Society of Madras.

The portraits category received a large number of entries. The face of an old woman with every wrinkle in focus made a poignant image.

The pictures on nature were the most vibrant as colours of the wild were captured on film. A photo of a pair of golden frogs leaping out of water shot by Santhosh Kumar Jana from West Bengal shows excellent timing.

B. Chidambaram, secretary of the All India Salon of Photography, said the exhibition was the best way to resuscitate the activities of the Photographic Society of Madras and spread the message about the joy of photography across the country. K.O. Issac, president of the Photographic Society of Madras, said about 2,100 entries were received and 212 were chosen for display at the salon.

About 200 other photographs by members have also been exhibited. A special section of photographs on the girl child is also part of the show. Camera buffs can also take a look at the photographic equipment stalls that have been put up outside the exhibition. The display is open till Saturday.
